Football Tips 12th April
It has arguably been one of the best seasons in the Premierhip’s history, and time to take a look forward to the weekends Premiership football action. The top of the table mirrors that of the bottom in that anything can still happen, and it probably will. At the moment, Liverpool sit proudly on top of the table after 33 games, but a single point separates them from second placed Chelsea. More significantly, 4 points behind lies Manchester City with two games in hand. And it is the game of the weekend that will pit Liverpool at home to Manchester City. Could this be the game that decides the title? It promises to be a high scoring game, as both these teams have scored 174 goals between them this season. It could be a cracker, but Liverpool’s inferior defence could see City coming out victors in a 4-3 win.
The next interesting race is the battle for fourth place and the final spot for the Champions League. After last week’s emphatic victory over Arsenal, Everton find themselves just a point behind with a game in hand. With Arsenal in FA Cup action this weekend, a draw or a victory over bottom club Sunderland for the Toffees will take them into fourth place. This could potentially be a high scoring game with Everton looking to exact revenge on the Mackems for their sole home defeat last year. They have also scored 3 goals in each of their last four games.
Hot on the heels are Spurs and Utd, both with an easier run in than Everton, but both 4 and 6 points behind respectively having played a game more. Spurs take on West Brom at the Hawthorns while Utd have the weekend off. If Spurs want to challenge for fourth, they need to start scoring big to improve their goal difference.
The bottom of the table makes for interesting viewing. While Sunderland remain rooted to the bottom, they do have two games in hand over Fulham and Cardiff who are just a couple of points ahead. Norwich are the club in free fall this season having lost 6 of their last 9 and could easily find themselves in the bottom three in a matter of a couple of weeks. They play away to Fulham in a big 6 pointer. A Fulham victory would leave them just 2 points behind 4th from bottom placed Norwich and severely crush Norwich’s confidence.
Cardiff find themselves in a tough away game against Southampton with the Saints in good goal scoring form. Could see a 4-0 victory for them there.
Elsewhere, Swansea host Chelsea with both teams desperate for points in their respective challenges. Can see a comfortable Chelsea victory here to put the pressure on City and Liverpool.
Palace and Villa both play each other, and with both reasonably safe from relegation could see a 2-2 draw. Stoke host Newcastle and hope to add to Newcastle’s woes; they’ve conceded eleven goals in their past 3 games with nothing scored in return.
The business end of the season is here, and with many clubs still with massive challenges in the coming weeks, it promises to be another weekend of high action and many goals.
