Cheltenham – Day One 350/1 Double
Cheltenham. The pinnacle. The jewel in the crown of Jump racing. The Gold Cup, the Champion Hurdle, the World Hurdle, the Champion Chase, and four days of ultra-competitive undercard over all imaginable trips and distances. Enjoy.
Reputations have been made and history written and re-written. The likes of Kauto Star, Denman and Best Mate are synonymous with Prestbury Park. This is the first of four blogs looking to unearth the next big thing, and each will bring you the best value bests for the days racing. Check in from day one for the best things for tomorrow.
Day One has notoriously been a blood bath on betting fronts. The Cheltenham Cheer will be as loud as ever for the 2013 Supreme Novices Hurdle to get things underway. And from the off, we’re going with a fancy priced pick earmarked to create some early festival profits.
Willie Mullins “Annie Power” ticks all the boxes for a big priced value bet. With five places being paid, when picking a long shot, it makes perfect sense to make a selection that is unbeaten and never lost a race of any format. Yes, this is a step up in class, by wins over hurdles by a minimum margin of at least six lengths demands respect. This is an unpredictable race, and represents the value for day one. There is a little of 25/1 available, and plenty of 20’s. Take a bookie paying five places and Annie Power is the one.
My other big investment for day one is “Cinders and Ashes” in the Champion Hurdle. The good ground that we can expect will really suit him, and McCain will get to the bottom of him eventually. In the Supreme he waltzed in an easy winner despite a couple of big mistakes. He offers the tactical versatility that should serve us well in this race. Throw in the fact that his rider is in my opinion one of the best at evaluating and reading a race and the 12/1 available has immense each way appeal.
At big prices, it would seem churlish to not double these ones up for a nominal each way double as well as the singles. Even placed the double pays over 9/1 seeking out the above prices, and should both rattle in; we are looking at over a 350 fold return on a unit stake. These two have been underestimated.
Best Bets (Day One):
Annie Power each way @25/1
Cinders and Ashes each way @ 12/1
Each way double both.
